The Wells County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors recently surprised the leadership team and staff of Berne Apparel during a Tuesday morning safety meeting with the honor of being named the March Member of the Month. President and CEO John Nussbaum, Director of Operations Brian Randol, and their team were recognized for their longstanding commitment to quality, community involvement, and the hardworking individuals their products are designed to serve.
For more than a century, Berne Apparel has been rooted in the values of hard work and reliability. The company’s story began in 1915, when the original business was established in Berne, Indiana. After World War II, John Nussbaum’s grandfather returned home from military service, earned a degree in cost accounting, and joined the company. At that time, the operation was small, employing only six sewing operators. Over time, through dedication and strategic growth, the business expanded and eventually became the thriving workwear brand it is today.
John Nussbaum himself joined the company shortly after graduating from college with a degree in computer systems. What began as a position in the IT department soon evolved into something much larger. Over the years, Nussbaum gained experience in operations, sourcing, and sales before stepping into his current leadership role.
“I came here right out of college,” Nussbaum shared. “I didn’t necessarily plan to go into the business, but over time I worked in several departments and learned the company from the inside out. This year marks my 25th year with Berne.”
Today, Berne Apparel operates its primary facility in Ossian, Indiana, with additional offices and third-party distribution centers across the United States and Canada. The Ossian location, which has served as the company’s main facility for the past 16 years, is home to approximately 83 employees who support operations, logistics, and distribution for the nationally recognized brand.
“We pride ourselves in quality when it comes to our product, and we pride ourselves in treating people right,” Nussbaum said. “Whether it’s our employees or our customers, we want to do the right thing over time.” That philosophy is reflected in the company’s focus on producing durable, dependable workwear designed for people who put in long hours on the job. Berne Apparel’s products are commonly worn by farmers, factory workers, road crews, and individuals working in demanding outdoor environments who rely on gear that can stand up to the rigors of hard work.
Even as Berne Apparel’s reach continues to grow nationally, the company remains deeply connected to the community it calls home. Many of its employees live and work in Wells County and the surrounding region. “We’re part of the community here,” Nussbaum said. “A lot of us live here, work here, and we’re proud to be here. Wells County and Indiana are home for us.”
Looking ahead, the company remains focused on steady growth while staying true to the values that have guided it for generations. “Our plan is simple,” Nussbaum explained. “Make great products, treat people right, and spread the word.”
