The Wells County Chamber of Commerce has recognized Bluffton Family Eye Care as its May Member of the Month. The practice, led by Dr. Matt Mitchell, was honored for its long-standing commitment to quality care and community service. Dr. Mitchell accepted the recognition alongside his wife, Holly, daughters Hope and Grace, and the practice’s dedicated staff.

With a history spanning over 100 years, Bluffton Family Eye Care began as a small optical and jewelry shop in downtown Bluffton. The practice has operated under only four owners since its founding. Dr. Mitchell became the fourth in 2010, after initially working one day a week under Dr. Jim VanWinkle. Since taking ownership, he has guided the office through significant growth, expanding the staff, updating technology, and enhancing services.

That patient-centered approach has fueled both the office’s growth and its commitment to modernization. “Our team works hard to make people feel comfortable and cared for,” Dr. Mitchell said. “We want every patient to know we see them as individuals, not just appointments on the schedule.” The number of staff has grown from four to seven full-time employees, and the office now sees nearly double the number of patients compared to 2006. A remodeling project is currently underway to accommodate the growing patient base and provide improved services. Bluffton Family Eye Care has also upgraded to electronic records and uses advanced diagnostic tools to detect and manage a range of complex eye conditions.

Building on its long-standing foundation, Bluffton Family Eye Care now offers comprehensive services for all ages, including routine exams, glaucoma and diabetic eye management, and emergency care. The clinic manages approximately 300 glaucoma patients and tracks the eye health of over 1,000 individuals with diabetes. It is also home to the only vision therapy center in Wells County, serving both children and adults with amblyopia, strabismus, and visual processing needs.

Pediatric specialist Dr. Michelle Frye leads the care of children under age five, beginning exams as young as six months, and again at 3 and 5 years of age before starting school.  Schoolchildren are seen annually, while most adults are seen every two years unless they wear contact lenses or have medical conditions that require more frequent follow-up.

This emphasis on access and continuity of care is central to the practice’s mission. “We’re here to make sure everyone—kids, seniors, and everyone in between—has access to quality eye care,” said Dr. Mitchell. To help reduce barriers, the practice accepts a wide range of insurance plans, including state-funded coverage. It also offers cost-effective solutions, such as a premium children’s lens package for just $48, which includes high-quality materials often not covered by insurance.

That commitment to service extends far beyond the Bluffton community. Earlier this year, Dr. Mitchell traveled to Honduras on a mission trip, where he helped distribute eyeglasses in remote villages through a partnership with the Lions Club. “That experience reminded me why this work matters,” he shared. “Vision affects everything—learning, working, driving, and simply living. Everyone deserves the ability to see clearly.”

Looking ahead, Bluffton Family Eye Care plans to bring on an additional doctor to meet increasing demand. “Even during our slower seasons, we’re booked five weeks out,” Dr. Mitchell explained. “The need is there, and we’re committed to meeting it without compromising the quality of care.”

As patient demand continues to grow, so does the practice’s commitment to offering a wide range of high-quality eyewear. Popular brands like Oakley, Ray-Ban, Nike, Gucci, Kate Spade, Coach, and Guess are currently available, with new additions coming soon, giving patients even more stylish and functional options to choose from.
