The Wells County Chamber of Commerce recently honored The Mattress & Furniture Store as the April Member of the Month, surprising owner Peg Fiechter with the recognition during a visit from the Chamber Ambassadors. Peg, who has become a familiar face in the Bluffton business community, was genuinely moved by the acknowledgment.
The Mattress & Furniture Store, located at 915 N Main Street Suite D., in Bluffton, has been a trusted local destination for mattresses and home furnishings for the past seven years. But Peg’s story stretches further back—she’s been in the retail business for 13 years, bringing with her a blend of entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and strong family values.
“Blake (her son) called me one day and said, ‘Hey Mom, do you want to open your own store?’” Peg recalled with a smile. That simple question launched a family-run business that has not only endured but thrived. Peg credits much of the success to Blake and Taye Fiechter, who play an active role in operations, and to the broader community that has supported them from day one.
Peg is quick to recognize the people who help make the store feel like more than just a business. “We’ve been blessed with great people,” she said. “Our delivery team—three retired gentlemen—treat the store like it’s theirs. They’re dependable, kind, and take pride in what they do. Customers feel that. We’re also fortunate to have fantastic part-time employees who bring energy, care, and dedication to everything they do. They’re a big part of what makes this place special.”
The Mattress & Furniture Store specializes in Therapedic mattresses, all custom ordered and manufactured in Rock Island, Illinois. Peg takes pride in offering mattresses that are not sitting in warehouses for months—most are made fresh, often just days before arriving at her store. “That’s something a lot of customers don’t realize,” she said. “Our mattresses haven’t been sitting in a 100-degree warehouse in July or freezing in January. They’re made when we order, and it shows in the quality.”
While mattresses are their best sellers, the store also carries sofas, loveseats, and dinettes. Customers can browse in-store or shop by catalog, and Peg is always happy to help guide buyers with honest advice—and even a color wheel or two. “Taye is very creative and helps with the design side,” Peg added. “She’s got an eye for what works.”
Though the day-to-day can be physically demanding, especially with furniture deliveries, Peg loves what she does and has no immediate plans to slow down. “I have a fantastic part-time employee starting in June who’s very committed,” she said. “I’d like to keep things moving forward and maybe go down to a couple of days a week eventually. But the truth is, I love being here. I love helping people make their homes more comfortable.”
As a long-time resident and business owner, Peg deeply values the support of the Bluffton community. “Years ago, people would go to Portland or larger towns for big purchases,” she said. “Now they understand the value of shopping local. It supports the local economy, creates jobs, and often comes with better service—like free delivery, even to surrounding areas. I appreciate that people ‘get it’ now.”
