In fact, Indiana had the biggest percentage gain in jobs of all the states, at 1.9 percent between January and May.  It was also the third highest in adding manufacturing jobs, exceeded only by Ohio and Texas (see Figure 1).

“It’s just our way of saying think outside the box,” said Mark Becker, executive director of the Northeast Indiana Fund, which created the Vision 2020 Regional Economic Summit.

“The old approach to (attracting business) isn’t working, so we need to be bold.”

To that extent, the meeting of the minds yielded what officials called Five Pillars of Success: fostering 21st-century talent, competitive business climate, entrepreneurship, infrastructure and quality of life.

Audience members attending the event – free and open to the public – voted on strategies to achieve those goals. The results were:

21st-century talent – Give every academically qualified high school graduate the opportunity and resources for post-secondary education.

Competitive business climate – Combine expertise in engineering and manufacturing and provide incentives to emerging technologies.

Entrepreneurship – Set up national and international networks to identify and bring to the region viable growth-oriented businesses.

Infrastructure – Develop a regional plan that addresses infrastructure, sustainability, land use and the optimal location of regional-scale industrial sites, among others.

Quality of life – Launch a regional multimodal network that promotes an active, healthy lifestyle and connects and provides access to schools, neighborhoods, businesses and natural and cultural assets.

The strategies sprung from six months of consulting community leaders in a 10-county region.

Led by Keith Busse, president and chief executive officer of Steel Dynamics, and Michael Packnett, president and chief executive officer of Parkview Health, the initiative’s main goal is increasing northeast Indiana’s per-capita income, which lags the national average by nearly 20 percent, they said.

“We’re sick and tired of this slide,” said Packnett, referring to the area’s income spiral that has been on the decline for at least the past 15 years. “This is not the way we want to go.”

Before the meeting, the Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana released their own survey, which had similar findings.

Professional career opportunities were listed as the main area needing improvement.

“Higher-paying jobs,” said Michael Barranda, president-elect of the group.

“That was kind of something that kept coming up.”

On the positive side, the Young Leaders poll, which surveyed 200 people in their 20s and 30s over a four-month span, found that northeast Indiana’s low cost of living is a major draw.

“We just wanted to make sure we were heard from,” Barranda said.

“We didn’t just want the opinions of other people to dictate things.”
